Cat and Scarab Mummies Discovered in 2,500-Year-Old. The “unique” discovery was inside seven tombs belonging to different pharaonic eras in the funerary complex of Saqqara, located south of Cairo
An Egyptian archaeological mission has discovered seven tombs belonging to different pharaonic eras in the funerary complex of Saqqara, located south of Cairo, containing dozens of cat mummies, beetle mummies and other wooden statues, the Ministry of Antiques.
In three of the tombs in Saqqara, belonging to the New Kingdom (between the sixteenth and eleventh centuries BC), mummies of cats have been discovered , since that place served as a cemetery for the felines, representing the goddess of ancient Egypt Bastet, said the Egyptian Antiquities Minister, Khaled al Anani, in a statement.
The secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mustafa Waziri, said that “mummified beetles in that area have been discovered” for the first time, as well as dozens of mummies of cats and about a hundred wooden statues of cats.
” We are facing a very important discovery, during the excavation tasks we located two boxes: one of the sarcophagi, limestone and with an insect carved on the outside, contains more than 200 beetles while the second, rectangular and with a lid decorated with three insects in black, houses two mummified beetles, “explained Waziri, general secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
“Since we found them, we have asked museums in the United States, Italy, France, Belgium or the United Kingdom to look for similar specimens, and the answer has been that they do not exist, they have coffins of beetles but not mummies, we are very proud” he added.
They have also found other wooden statues that represent different animals, such as a cobra and a crocodile, the note adds.
Egyptian archaeologists have also found in one of the mausoleums a tomb of the supervisor of the royal buildings at the end of the 5th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom (2,400 BC), identified as Kofo Em Hat.
The Egyptian minister stressed that this discovery is one of a series of three that have been found and will be announced before the end of 2018.
Egypt works to discover new tombs and announce them regularly in order to attract tourists after the decline of tourism after the riots of 2011 and the coup of July 3, 2013, that overthrew the then president, the Islamist Mohamed Morsi
The cult of fauna in the Egypt of the Pharaohs reached its zenith between the late periods (656-332 BC) and Ptolemaic (332-30 BC) when, oblivious to their destiny as Roman subjects, tens of thousands of pilgrims acquired embalmed animals and deposited them in enormous catacombs, hoping that the god incarnated by the remains would listen to their prayers.
