The president of Senegal, Macky Sall, led the large delegation of Senegal for the presentation of the candidacy and in his presentation to the members of the IOC said that this country of West Africa has an “emerging social and economic plan”.

He also stressed that “youth is the heart of that plan.”

He promised the completion of an Olympic stadium with a capacity for 50,000 people in Dakar, which will have the new city of Diamandis and the coastal town of Saly as venues for the Olympic Games.

“We are honored, his decision is unprecedented in the history of the Olympic Games,” said the president during the election, which took place at the 133rd session of CO I in Buenos Aires, the city that hosts the current edition of the Games of the Youth from Saturday and until October 18.

The Dakar 2022 Youth Olympic Games will be held in the months of May and June since it is the time of drought and therefore less likely tropical diseases such as malaria, Zika, and dengue.

“There is a very low risk of tropical diseases, according to the information of experts of the World Health Organization and others,” said one of the members of the IOC, the Turkish Ugur Erdener.

“It is the time of Africa,” said the president of the IOC, the German Thomas Bach.

The proclamation was made by highlighting the “long-term” quality of the program presented by Senegal and the “political stability” of the country.

Bach applauded that the three losing Olympic committees “support the decision of the IOC” to deliver the Games to Senegal, in what he called “a great demonstration of African solidarity, fair play,  and Olympic spirit.”

The Dakar Games

The capital of Senegal was chosen as the venue for the next edition of the Youth Olympic Games in 2022. It will be Africa’s first time as the hostess.

While the Youth Olympic Games take place in Buenos Aires, there is already a venue for the next edition in 2022 and it is a novelty. The chosen city was Dakar, in Senegal. Thus, Africa will host for the first time in history an Olympic competition.

The decision of the Olympic Committee was announced on Monday in Buenos Aires, and through the official Twitter of the Games announced: “It’s Africa’s time!”. The other applicants were also from that continent: Tunisia, Nigeria, and Botswana.

The one in Dakar will be the fourth edition of the Summer Youth Games, which premiered in 2010 in Singapore and then went through Nanjing (China) in 2014, before arriving in Argentina in 2018.
