Kareem Leiva (left) and Heather Barrón could face the death penalty if they are found guilty of the death of the minor Anthony Ávalos, son of the woman.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office said Wednesday that Heather Barrón and her partner, Kareem Leiva, could be sentenced to death for the murder of the 10-year-old woman’s son, Anthony Ávalos.

In the indictment against the couple, who in an appearance today in a court in Lancaster pleaded not guilty, the Prosecutor added on Wednesday charges of intentionality in torture and death of the child under 10 years.

With this aggravating circumstance, if the defendants are found guilty of all charges made in their court, they can be sentenced to the death penalty.

The prosecution also made this Wednesday a charge of child abuse against the couple, for hitting the younger brother of Anthony.

The two defendants must return to the shortening for a scheduled hearing on November 27.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department (LASD) investigation, on June 20, two officers responded to a warning call from Lancaster, north of Los Angeles, where the family resided.

The soldiers found the child unconscious and in serious condition, and they took him to a local hospital where he died the next morning.

According to police reports, it was the mother who made the call to the 911 emergency number and said that her son suffered a fall, but the officers began an investigation after observing suspicious circumstances.
