President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un shake hands after signing a joint statement during their historic summit.

During a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the UN General Assembly, Trump said he had received another “extraordinary” letter from North Korean Kim Jong-un

“We look forward to our second summit that will take place, I think very soon,” said Trump.

For his part, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Pyongyang in October to prepare the second summit between US President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the State Department said in a statement.

Pompeo met today on the fringes of the General Assembly of the United Nations with his North Korean counterpart, Ri Yong-ho, to talk about that next summit.

In that meeting, Pompeo “accepted the invitation of leader Kim to travel to Pyongyang next month,” detailed the State Department.

The Pompeo trip will aim to discuss a “final and complete denuclearization”, as well as a second high-level meeting between Kim and Trump.

The US president said on Tuesday that his second meeting with Kim will be “fairly soon” and explained that Pompeo will make arrangements for that meeting in “the immediate future.”

At their historic summit in June in Singapore, Trump and Kim signed a declaration that opens the doors to the denuclearization of North Korea in exchange for the US granting guarantees for its survival, although no specific deadlines were specified for those objectives.

In recent weeks, the bilateral dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang had become entrenched due to differences over how to carry out that process.

Last week, the US government determined that the process of denuclearization of North Korea should be completed by late January 2021, when Trump’s term would end.

North Korea has demanded progress in signing a peace treaty with the South to put an end to the state of war that still remains technically in the peninsula, in exchange for concrete steps to dismantle its arsenal that requires the White House.
