Learning from Grandparents: The relationship between active grandparents and grandchildren is a special one. For all of us who celebrated NSW Grandparents Day, we know how much younger generations have to gain from grandparents in the wisdom, knowledge, and loving support they give- but what about how much grandparents benefit from younger generations?
Learning from Grandparents: Benefits
A recent study from Boston College in the United States how big of an impact strong emotional ties between grandchildren and grandparents can have on the well-being of both generations, significantly decreasing signs of depressive symptoms in both.
The study shows that not only are strong grandparent-grandchild ties a sign of strong family relationships overall but that there are specific benefits from this kind of relationship. Grandchildren gain wisdom and the benefit of their grandparent’s life experience to prepare them to meet life’s challenges. At the same time, grandparents benefit from these relationships by being exposed to new and different ideas that they might not otherwise encounter.
