At Least 82 Dead After Earthquake Hits Indonesia: The authorities raised to 82 the dead ones by the earthquake of magnitude 7 that struck today the tourist island of Lombok and caused material damages that also affected the neighboring island of Bali, both in the central region of the archipelago of Indonesia.

The regional head of the Agency of Management of Disasters, Mohammad Rum, said that some victims died in the act due in some cases to landslides in buildings and others died in the hospital, according to local media.

The quake, whose hypocentre was located 10 meters deep, came a week after another earthquake that caused 16 deaths and more than 300 injured in the same Lombok.

In the tremor that occurred on Sunday, the highest number of deaths, 65 , occurred in the district of North Lombok, while there were nine in West Lombok, two in Central Lombok, two in East Lombok and four in the city of Mataram, according to the latest official data quoted by Antara news agency.

One of the victims is a 14-year-old student who was crushed when the Islamic school where he was praying collapsed and died in the hospital in Mataram, the main city of Lombok.

Singapore’s Interior Minister, K. Shanmugam, who is in Mataram, the main city of Lombok, said there were scenes of panic and damage to the hotel where he is staying. “I was in my room, on the 10th floor, working on my laptop.” Suddenly the room shook violently, cracks opened in the walls, it was practically impossible to stand, I heard screams, “ Shanmugan said on his Facebook account.

In the photos posted on the network, debris can be seen in the streets of Lombok due to the earthquake, which caused panic scenes at the international airport in Bali. “There have been tsunamis that entered the land with heights of 10 to 13 centimeters. The estimated maximum height is half a meter, ” the spokesman for the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.

However, soon after, the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, on its Twitter account, canceled the tsunami warning. In addition to Lombok, Sutopo explained that the quake was felt in Bali, the island of Sumbawa and the province of East Java.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which records seismic activity around the world, located the quake 2.4 kilometers east of Loloan, a town in the north of the island. The earthquake occurred at 19:46 local time (11.46 GMT), and was followed by several aftershocks.

The island of Lombok, dominated by the Rinjani volcano, is located east of Bali, Indonesia’s main tourist destination. Last July 29, 16 people died and 355 were injured in an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 and later aftershocks in Lombok, which caused damage in about 1,500 buildings.

Indonesia sits on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity shaken by some 7,000 tremors a year, most of them moderate. In 2004, an earthquake near the northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra generated a tsunami that caused at least 280,000 deaths in a dozen countries bathed by the waters of the Indian Ocean, mostly in Indonesia.
