This One Sports Branch Starts the Jakarta Palembang 2018 Asian Games Event: Chairman of the 2018 Asian Games Organizing Committee (Inasgoc) Erick Thohir ensures football is the first sport to have competed at the 2018 Asian Games. The plan, football starts August 10, precedes the opening ceremony on August 18.
“The first match, up to today, is football on August 10. If everything goes according to plan, August 10 and August 12 are the first matches, from football, then the basketball on August 14,” said Erick Thohir after accompanying Vice President Jusuf Kalla to visit the site of preparation for the Asian Games in Jakarta on Friday.
With the first match on August 10, Inasgoc estimates athletes will arrive in Indonesia on August 7 and 8. As much as possible, the soccer athlete will be placed at Kemayoran Athlete’s House.
“The athletes who will come, for football on August 10 and 12, approximately 7 and 8 August they have arrived. Athletes are ready to accept the athlete actually on August 10, but of course, we will prepare well,” explained Erick.
Regarding the resignation of the Iraqi National Team from the 2018 Asian Games, Erick said there would be a decision on Friday afternoon regarding the re-draw regarding the grouping of football matches.
“There is a record that Iraq has resigned, so there will be a decision today from the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) and OCA (Olympic Council of Asia), whether there will be a special ‘drawing’ in the pool of the Iraqi national team,” said Erick.
Iraq previously entered Group C, along with national teams from Syria, East Timor, and China.
