Everything indicates that this year will break the hegemony of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was awarded the award in 2016 and 2017, both times above Lionel Messi, who was in second place. The podium was completed by Frenchman Antoine Griezmann and Brazilian Neymar, respectively.
Since 2008, the prizes awarded by FIFA (formerly Ballon d’Or and now The Best) were distributed between Cristiano and Messi. However, his weak performances in the World Cup, where both were dismissed in the second round, could sentence the end of his reign.
The list of candidates was prepared by a “jury of FIFA legends” and the winner will be chosen in a process that will have two stages since in the middle there will be a cut in which the list will be reduced to only three nominees.
Then all the technicians and captains of the national teams, specialized journalists and fans will be able to cast their vote on the FIFA.com site among the three finalists. Each voter will grant five points to his favorite, three to the second and one to the rest.
