Legend of Hindu
Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa who is the author of Mahabharata was born on this day to Parashara and fisherman’s daughter Satyavati. This day is treated as Vyasa Purnima. Veda Vyasa did the yeoman service for the cause of Vedic studies by taking all the Vedic hymns during their times, which divides them into four parts based on their sacrificial rites.

He taught to his four disciples named Palla, Vaisampayana, Jaimini and Sumantu. By dividing and editing that he earned honorific Vyasa. Mainly he divided the Veda into four and they are Rig, Yajur, Sama, Atharva. The Puranas and their histories are to be of 5th Veda.

Guru Purnima Significance
On this day all the spiritual people and devotees worship Vyasa mainly in the honor of divine personage and all the disciples give a Puja for their respective Preceptor or the guru Devs. For farmers, this day is having more significance. Setting of much needed rain as advent of cool showers gives good fresh life in paddy fields. Also, many believe that this day is good for starting their spiritual classes.
The spiritual seekers intensify their spiritual Sadhana on this day. The period Chaturmas which is of the four month period begins from this day. In early past wandering spiritual gurus and their disciples used to settle at a place for studying and discourse in Brahma sutras which is composed by Vyasa and engage them in the Vedantic lessons.

History of Buddhist
About 5 weeks the Buddha went from Bodhgaya to Sarnath after his enlightenment. Before that the Gautama attained his enlightenment. He gave up his austere penances and his friends. The monks left him and went to Isipatana which is also known as Sarnath.
After getting his enlightenment, the Buddha leave Uruvela and then travelled to Isipatana for joining and teaching them. He went to that place, because of his spiritual powers he had seen that his 5 former companions will be able to pick up Dharma easily.
When travelling to Sarnath, the Buddha had to cross Ganges and he had no money for paying to the ferryman and he crossed Ganges through the air. When the King Bimbisara heard of this act he abolished toll for ascetics.
When Gautama Buddha found his 5 companions, he taught them and they understood it quickly and as a result they also became enlightened. At this time, one of the community, such as Sangha was founded. The Buddha gave a sermon to five monks and it was his first sermon which is mentioned as Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta.
It was given on the day of the full moon of Asadha. Buddha spent a first rainy season, which is known as Varsha Vaasa at Sarnath at Mulagandhakuti. Mainly the Sangha had grown to 60 in numbers and sent his friends to different directions for teaching the Dharma. All the 60 monks were Arahants.
Indian academic tradition
With respect to the different religions, the Indian academics celebrate this day by thanking their teachers. Most of schools and colleges and also universities spent events in which students thank their teachers and remembering their past teachers. Most of alumni, students present gifts as sign of gratitude.
Observances of Buddhists
Buddhists find this day as Uposatha which is mainly to observe eight precepts. The Mediators of Vipassana practice meditation on this day under their teacher’s guidance.
The rainy season, the Varsha Vassa has started with this day. The rainy season last for 3 months from July to October. The Buddhists monks remain in a place generally in their temples. They dedicate Vassa to intensive meditation. They gave spiritual training and adopt more ascetic practices by giving meat and alcohol.
