Trump Changes His Words and Says That Russia Did Interfere in the US Elections

“I expressed myself badly (…) I meant to say that I see no reason why Russia was not behind” the interference in the 2016 presidential elections, Trump said in a statement at the White House

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he “expressed poorly” at the Helsinki summit and said he accepts “the conclusions” of his spy agencies that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections, after the wave of criticism received for disavowing them before his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

“I expressed myself badly (…) I meant to say that I see no reason why Russia was not behind” the interference in the 2016 presidential elections, Trump said in a statement at the White House.

At the joint press conference with Putin on Monday in Helsinki, the President had assured that he saw no reason why Russia was responsible for this interference, which sparked outrage in the US for giving more credibility to Putin’s refusal to the reports of their own intelligence agencies, such as the FBI and the CIA.

On Tuesday, however, Trump added that he has “full faith” in the American intelligence community.

“I accept the conclusions of the intelligence agencies that Russian interference took place in the elections,” he said, although he added that “there was no conspiracy” between his election campaign and Moscow.

Trump tried to soothe the flood of criticism received, including from the bosom of his own Republican party, for not directly facing the Russian leader.
