Russia 2018 World Cup : The World Cup is much more than a football championship: it is a global event that will have repercussions in all types of industries. Also in the technological.
For the world of technology, this year’s World Cup will be very special. In fact, many journalists, specialists and technological bloggers consider it “the most innovative in history”.
Russia 2018 World Cup
“technological played a crucial role for media, organizers and spectators in previous editions of the tournament, and Russia 2018 World Cup is no exception, but what will be different this year is the impact that technology will represent within the field itself ” , explains Steve McCaskill, journalist specialized in sports and technology, for a column in the US magazine Forbes.
What are the main novelties?
1. VAR: assisted video-refereeing
“In the last championship in Brazil we saw the debut of online goal technology: it was the first time referees received some kind of artificial help in making decisions,” says McCaskill.
“This year we will see Arbitral Assistance by Video (VAR, by its acronym in English), an advance that will undoubtedly feed headlines this summer.”
It works through a network of cameras strategically placed in some points of the field that will send signals to a cabin composed of a responsible referee (VAR), an avatar referee (AVAR) and a video operator (VOR). The game will stop while reviewing the recorded images.
This method has already been tested in FIFA and Confederations Cup matches, and will be used in all 64 matches of the Russia 2018 World Cup. It is the so-called “goal line technology”.
The controversy is that it can change the outcome of the matches: “I’m a little afraid of the World Cup, where there will be referees who never led a game with VAR, I hope there are no scandals or problems,” said Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA.
2. The Smart Telstar 18 ball
Another of the great technological innovations will be the new edition of the Telstar 18 ball, developed by Adidas since 1970.The company said it is ” a reinvention of the classic model . ”
The main innovation is that, for the first time, a World Cup ball includes an NFC(Near Field Communication) chip , which allows the ball to be connected to an intelligent device, such as a smartphone or a tablet.
“The Telstar 18 may just be a ball, but it symbolizes something that is even bigger than the world’s favorite sport: it is an object that will connect 32 teams around the world, and also the pioneering sphere full of technology that It gives it its name, “said Marc Chacksfield, founder of TechRadar technology site.
3. Matches in 4K, the highest possible resolution
During the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, tests were already done with 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels), “a resolution that is so high that it is almost impossible,” the computer blog ComputerHoy reads.
And for the first time this year matches will be rebroadcast in this resolution.Indeed, the 4K – also known as Ultra HD – is much more powerful than high definition: it has a resolution up to four times higher than that of the HD format(1920 x 1080 pixels), and offers great image quality, with a contrast much better between dark and bright tones.
Among other details, it allows to appreciate even the wrinkles on the faces of the players.
The Russian state company Rostec is responsible for sending the signal to the entire planet, although to enjoy it you need a compatible TV.
4. Digital identity
The digitization of the fans is another of the advances. It is what has been called as “Fan ID” , an identification provided by the Russian government with a chip inside that will allow fans to enter the stadium.
It will also serve its bearers to go through customs controls without having to carry a visa: “It allows a physical control much faster because it is enough to point a laser to theoretically know everything about each person and assess the level of risk,” said the Russian communications minister, Nikolai Nikiforov.
5. Facial recognition
And also to improve security will serve the facial recognition technology that Russia will use in all stadiums.
According to the Russian newspaper RBK, the terrorist threat is one of the main headaches for Russia. Thanks to the cameras, the Russian authorities hope that not even a face escapes them, so that if someone shows some suspicious behavior they can identify it immediately.
The system was successfully tested by the Chinese police, who have it incorporated into their glasses since this year.
