On this occasion, the president requested this amount to protect the area of the Rio Grande Valley (Texas) “at the request of immigration authorities in the area,” according to senior officials of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a call with journalists.

Trump requested the same amount last year, 1,600 million, to build a wall in the same area and San Diego (California), bordering the city of Tijuana (Mexico), but Congress has not approved a specific item for now. His construction.

“A border wall is fundamental to combat drug addiction that causes thousands of unnecessary deaths in the US and to prevent the illegal entry of immigrants,” said the same source, who preferred to remain anonymous.

The Trump Administration expects to spend a total of 25 billion dollars on the border wall, which includes 18 billion of the physical construction itself and 7 billion of technological improvements and equipment, detailed from the department.

However, this amount is subject to negotiation on an immigration reform that can begin in the Senate and that will determine the future of 690 thousand undocumented youth who arrived in the country of children, among other measures.

In total, the proposal incorporates an increase of 3,400 million dollars (8 percent) for the DHS budget with respect to 2017, the most recent date for which data are available.

This item includes, in addition to the wall, 782 million to incorporate 2 thousand new agents of the Immigration and Customs Service (ICE), double the expected number; and 750 new border police, from the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

“These new police officers would help fulfill Trump’s commitment to arrest and deport illegal immigrants, dismantle the contraband networks and improve public safety,” officials said, recalling that Trump wants to increase the number of agents during his term.

The President’s proposal for the DHS budget also calls for increased surveillance by video and other technologies at the border, strengthening the country’s cybersecurity and increasing emergency funds for the recovery of natural disasters.
